SULFATEQ™

SULFATEQ™ is a sulfate removal system that results in minimal waste and maximum recovery of valuable resources. For more than 15 years, SULFATEQ™ has been applied in full-scale installations.

Its bioprocesses for sulfate removal in water are preferred over chemical processes in sulfate removal. Not only because they are more sustainable, but also because of specific advantages. SULFATEQ™ is a safe, effective and odor-free process. It treats acidic, alkaline and pH-neutral streams in ambient conditions. SULFATEQ™ simultaneously recovers valuable metals, such as copper, nickel and zinc, and removes sulfate (<300 mg/l), calcium (<100 mg/l>, magnesium (<4g/l), manganese, selenium, thallium, etc. As a result, the effluent is improved and reduced. And often, the effluent is free of solid waste and wastewater is reused in the facility. It is thus a much better alternative to lime treatment, reverse osmosis and ion exchange.</

Where this sulfate removal system is applied

  • Effluent treatment in the metal industry
  • Wash tower acid treatment
  • Brine treatment of reverse osmosis in combination with metal recovery to increase overall water recovery
  • Acid mine drainage treatment in combination with metal recovery
  • Effluent treatment and metal recovery in the viscose industry for the removal of metal, sulfate and COD
  • Integration with lime neutralization plant to improve the effluent, reduce total dissolved solids and reduce the sludge whilst improving the quality, resulting in less liability

Feasibility of SULFATEQ™

The typical range for the application of SULFATEQ™ is an influent sulfate concentration of 1,000-25,000 mg/l and a pH level of 2-8. SULFATEQ™ is used as a standalone installation or as the final treatment at a lime-gypsum plant.

The power of this sulfate removal system lies in its ability to solve multiple problems with one installation: sulfate removal and simultaneous metal recovery.

How SULFATEQ™ removes sulfate from wastewater

After converting sulfate to sulfide, the biological sulfide oxidation process efficiently removes the sulfide from either wastewater or gas by converting it into biosulfur. The result is a sulfide-free effluent low in sulfate, without the need for sulfide precipitation using iron-based chemicals.
